Norfolk Barn

nimtim were asked to review the scope and potential for reconfiguring and extended a converted barn in Norfolk. Sitting within a conservation area the barn originally dates from the 17th century and is predominately constructed of masonry with flint walls. The owners wanted to upgrade the current spaces which flowed awkwardly from one another and also to create new spaces for family life.

nimtim proposed a side extension linking the current building with pre existing out buildings. A gable end roof matching the existing height maximises the internal space while remaining respectful of the original building and its surroundings.

The new space provides a new family snug flooded with light from a generous roof light and a study area. Crucially nimtim repositions and re-angles the existing staircase unlocking the layout over 3 floors. The existing living rooms becomes a large kitchen/dining area, while a newly created utility area and guest bedroom suite completes the brief. The change in angle of staircase allows for a more efficient layout on the first floor with a new ensuite and larger family bathroom, and also creates a further bedroom in the current attic space.
